Introduction To Page ID and Post ID in WordPress

What is a Page ID and Post ID in WordPress?

WordPress assigns every content with a separate number for transparency. As a result, it uses this ID to find the content as well as to track the website. Not only pages and posts but also tags, categories, menus, etc. have their own IDs. In fact, everything is WordPress has its own unique ID. This is also stored in the database of the site for reference purposes.

When you edit a post, titles may change but the ID associated with it remains the same as it is static.

Why you need Page ID and Post ID?

Especially, if you use plugins to include or exclude posts then they will ask this unique number from you. This is also useful when we want to assign a separate CSS for a specific page or an element. We can do it in WordPress with the help of the ID of that element as a CSS class.

There may be conditions where you need to query specific content with the help of shortcode parameters. Plugins do it for you but you need to know the unique integer.

Coders who know about the basics of PHP can add code snippets to specific posts or pages with their help. It involves the addition of test codes or some request commands to the destination.

In addition, you can include custom PHP functions while using conditional tags on specific pages or posts. You can display both custom header images and navigation menus in specific pages. Here’s the solution to find your page ID or post ID.

How to find WordPress Page ID and Post ID?

How To Find Post ID and Page ID in WordPress

Whenever you edit your content in the dashboard, you will see the unique ID associated with it in the URL.

Login to your admin dashboard and open pages menu. Select the page whose ID you are searching for.

For posts and pages, when you click edit you will see a format post=Number.

You can also simply hover in the edit option and check the lower left-hand corner of your browser.

This is the ID you were searching for. In addition, the post ID is similar in the case of custom post types.

As we have already discussed, we also have specific IDs for other elements.

In the case of media ID, the post ID is in the same format as a normal page or post type.

In the case of category, the post ID can be found out from Category&tag_ID=number

These IDs will be helpful for you while working in WordPress.

How to find bulk Page/Post IDS

There are plugins that create an additional column to display the associated IDs. Though it saves time, it is not recommended.

You can search for several plugins in the official WordPress plugin repository for this purpose. If we can know it by going through it manually, why to add an extra plugin?

WordPress Get Post ID Function

You can also use a function to query the post ID. This can be useful for developers.

Within a loop

You can obtain post ID within a loop by calling the function the_ID()

During a loop, this function will echo the unique ID number of the current page or post.

In this loop, the function the_ID() expects the context for the data associated with page or post.

Use this function in a loop to find a unique ID of the current post.

<?php the_ID(); ?>

Outside the loop

However, if you are in the footer or outside the loop, you need to add the following code:

global $post;

The post data declaration as a global variable helps to access the current page or post data. With the help of reference, the ID is accessed.

$post->ID
Example:
function test_function()
{
global $post;
$thePostID = $post->ID;
}
