How to Change Header Image in WordPress

What’s the first thing when a visitor comes to your site the first time?

Undoubtedly, the header image is one of them. The header image describes your brand or blog theme. Making the same images across all social media platforms helps to make uniformity to identify in social media.

In this article, you will know how to change header image in WordPress with different methods.

Where is the header image?

Usually, you will find a header image towards the top of any site, as the name suggests. You will see the website title and different menu following the header image. The theme that you are using may have their default image. However, it’s always an excellent choice to set a custom header image that describes your site.

What type of images can you use?

You can use any images if it is present in your dashboard or your hard drive. Depending on the theme, you may need to crop an image if it too large at the time of uploading. The best practice is to check the dimension of the header image accepted by the theme and uploading the same size for a clear image.

How to change header image in WordPress?

During the theme development, developers provide an option to customize the header image. There may be certain limitations in the header image related to the size of the header. However, if this option is available in the theme, you can change the default header image with your image.

First of all, log in to the dashboard with your admin credentials.

Search for the Appearance menu and Go to Appearance > Header. You should note that in some themes, this option may be unavailable. In such a case, you can open Appearance > Customize to open the Customizer

If your theme has a Header sub-option inside Appearance, then it jumps directly to the header settings in the theme customizer.

Add new Header image

You can upload and select the image from your hard disk in the customizer. If an image is already present in the header image settings, you can delete that image and upload a new one. You should remember that you may need to crop a picture in this process.

However, you may go to Appearance > Customize to view all other header settings of the theme if it is present.

Header Settings

You can see the Top Header Settings, Menu Settings, Menu Order, and Inner Page Header Image inside the Header Settings in our theme. Try and explore the multiple settings in your theme too. You can see the Site Identity inside General Settings(in our theme), where we can upload the Site Title, Tagline, and header image for the homepage. The theme will mention the recommended size and width of the image. You can change or remove this image as per your need.

Do you know you have the header settings in the theme’s code?

If not, you should know that if you have access to the admin dashboard, you can take a look at the theme’s code as well.

For this, Go to Appearance > Theme Editor

There will be files like header.php and style.css that you need to look upon for this process

Header Settings in Theme Code

Go through these files in the editor and look for the filename associated with the header. Since you need to know coding to understand this, we recommend that you not enter the theme editor mode if you do not take help from the developer. You can try the previous method that works fine in most cases.

There is also the last option of using a plugin if these two methods do not work for you. However, we are not explaining the use of plugins in this post, as you can easily find a plugin from the WordPress Plugins repository.
